GSM Street Lighting Control in Riobamba, Ecuador

Over 5 500 streetlights are individually managed via GSM controllers, with scalable infrastructure ready for advanced smart city features.

Ecuador lighting

In Riobamba, Ecuador, over 5 500 street luminaires were integrated into an advanced lighting control system using individual GSM-based controllers. The system enables remote, real-time management of each light point, improving operational efficiency and supporting smart city development.

What Was Implemented

The project utilized NEMA GSM Node controllers to enable individual control of every streetlight. These devices establish reliable GSM communication with a central management system, allowing:
    •    Remote on/off switching and scheduling
    •    Real-time status monitoring of each luminaire
    •    Remote configuration updates
    •    Stable data transmission via GSM network

The system architecture supports real-time control and centralized monitoring without the need for additional communication infrastructure.

Results & Benefits

    •    Individual control of 5 500+ luminaires via GSM
    •    Real-time monitoring improves fault response and maintenance
    •    Energy savings through intelligent scheduling and adaptive operation
    •    Scalable software ready for future enhancements such as dimming or sensor integration
    •    Optimized lighting performance tailored to city-specific needs
