Wireless Radio Lighting Control in Muscat Bay, Oman Using LiWAVE Protocol

315 streetlights equipped with Radio Nodes and Base Stations for flexible and responsive lighting management via DITRA software

LiWAVE solution in Oman

A modern wireless lighting control system was deployed in Muscat Bay, Oman, covering 315 LED streetlights. The project was implemented using LiWAVE, a proprietary radio communication protocol developed by DITRA, designed specifically for outdoor lighting infrastructure.

The architecture consists of LiWAVE Radio Nodes mounted on top of each luminaire and Base Stations strategically placed to receive and forward data to the DITRA CMS platform. This setup enables seamless, real-time interaction with every luminaire across the site — without the need for wired connections.

What Was Implemented

The installed system allows for:

  • Remote on/off switching and brightness control

  • Real-time status and performance monitoring

  • Grouping of luminaires for zone-based control

  • Adaptive behavior based on predefined lighting scenarios

Using radio communication over the 868 MHz band, the system ensures reliable operation across open landscapes. The compact infrastructure and quick installation process made it ideal for the project site — a coastal, low-density environment with dispersed lighting points.

What We Delivered

   •    A unified lighting control system using existing power lines
    •    Seamless integration of new dimmable LEDs and old HPS lamps
    •    Intelligent dimming profiles for energy savings
    •    Reliable two-way communication using our DITRA CORE PRO and LiteLINE controllers

Technology Spotlight: LiWAVE Protocol by DITRA

LiWAVE is DITRA’s proprietary wireless communication protocol for outdoor lighting control. Operating over 868 MHz, it enables stable data transmission between luminaires, base stations, and the central CMS — without SIM cards or physical cables.

Key Advantages:

  • High system flexibility — supports both individual control and luminaire grouping

  • Sensor-ready — motion or ambient sensors can be attached to each luminaire or group

  • Cost-effective scaling — fewer sensors needed thanks to zone-based logic

  • Ideal for open areas — such as coastal zones, regional roads, or low-density developments

  • Minimal infrastructure impact — no trenching, minimal hardware, quick deployment

While LiWAVE is less suited for dense urban environments with heavy interference, it offers excellent coverage and performance in open or semi-urban locations like Muscat Bay.

Results & Benefits

  • Improved road safety through targeted and responsive lighting

  • Efficient system operation with real-time monitoring and analytics

  • Quick deployment with no need for communication cabling

  • Energy-conscious lighting through customized scenarios and brightness control

  • Flexible system design allowing for future upgrades, sensor integration, or expansion
