Celebrating New Life with Light: A Hospital Façade That Speaks

Using dynamic DMX lighting to illuminate a hospital in pink or blue for each newborn

How can a building become a part of life’s most joyful moments? This case explores a creative architectural lighting concept: illuminating a maternity hospital’s façade in blue or pink depending on the gender of the baby just born.

More than just decorative lighting, the installation becomes an emotional urban signal, sharing celebration with the public and connecting architecture with human experience in real time.

What Was Implemented

To realize this unique concept, a central DMX controller — DITRA ArchiCORE — was installed and connected to the hospital façade lighting system. A network of DMX splitters and repeaters ensured safe and reliable signal distribution across all connected luminaires.

Two dynamic lighting scenarios — one blue, one pink — were created using DITRA LightFORM Studio, the software platform for designing and testing lighting sequences for architectural and media installations. These scenarios were uploaded to DITRA CMS, which serves as the system’s central management software platform.

Once deployed, the system allowed authorized hospital staff to manually trigger lighting scenes at the touch of a button to announce the birth of a child. Additionally, the system supports automated activation based on scheduled time, calendar events, or external system triggers — ensuring both flexibility and ease of use.
